Welcome to

The Hillplains Cottage was designed and constructed by architects Jerry Wolveridge and Christina Theodorou of Wolveridge Architects throughout 2015 and 2016 as an independent and self-contained one bedroom luxury villa with its own natural pool and private gardens.
Located in the rural district of Metcalfe (100kms from Melbourne’s CBD) on an elevated hillside parcel with panoramic views of Mt Macedon, Greenhill and the Heathcote ranges, the Cottage sits adjacent to the family home known as the Hillplains House. It forms part of a rural complex of buildings and structures that have evolved on the land over a period of ten years.

This very private enclave sits at the edge of rolling pasture and backs into an extensive state forest, home to a large mob of kangaroos and other native fauna.

The architecture draws its simple and unadorned form out of the Victorian era agricultural buildings which dot the local landscape; it is characterised by long roof lines, chunky hardwood cladding and the somewhat haphazard organisation of its openings.

The principle of employing materials that are generally found in agricultural buildings applies to the interior spaces and fitout of the Cottage, too. A highly insulated burnished concrete floor with a mix of dark and light stained plywood walls and raked ceilings envelope the building. Concrete block masonry provides additional thermal mass within the space. A kitchenette with stainless steel bench, mirror and formply joinery is fitted with all the appliances and things you need for an enjoyable stay. There are no typical domestic finishes within the building, just a palette of warm textures executed in a thoughtful and sophisticated manner.

All buildings on the property have been designed and constructed with principles of Ecologically Sustainable Design (ESD) at the forefront. The Cottage itself has an energy rating in excess of 8 Stars.

The property has no grid connected services and employs a solar array of 4.6Kw roof mounted panels, battery system and backup generator, which kicks in on demand when the sun disappears for some time.

• Queen size bed in generously proportioned private bedroom which enjoys panoramic views to Mt Macedon, Heathcote and surrounds
• Fully appointed private ensuite
• Kitchenette with full fridge/freezer, dishwasher, outside bbq facilities
• Danish designed slow combustion heater
• Large, sliding doors and retractable flyscreens with private outlook to pool
• Cross-ventilation pathways through the living spaces
• Wi-fi, password provided on arrival
• There is no TV, so bring a book!
• Natural swimming pool (seasonal, approximately November to March)

The pool is fresh water and it is filled from the mineral springs of Trentham. The filtration system incorporates a series of biofiltration techniques that do not require chemicals, salt or chlorine, so it’s known as a natural pool. Beautiful, fresh water to swim in.

The above ground pool is 5 x 8 metres in surface area plus a water garden of lillies and reeds. Its exterior was constructed using off form board lined concrete walls with a hand trowelled burnished concrete interior.

Wayne and Annika, of Natural Swimming Pools Australia, assisted us in the creation of our natural pool. For more information on natural pools visit their website www.naturalswimpools.com.au.
